Most everyone leaves their home for extended periods of time for one reason or another. When and if you do, do you know how to shut off the gas to your home, as a precautionary risk while you and your loved ones are away?

It’s not just the fact that shutting off the gas when you leave town is a good idea, it’s important to know how stop the gas flow in case of a gas leak or other gas problems. Here at Dutton, we’re here to help!

Remember:

Locate your meter on the side of the house, possibly near the front, on the inside of a cabinet.

Notice the valve sticking just above the ground.

Have an emergency shutoff or crescent wrench.

Turn valve clockwise until perpendicular to the gas pipe.

Once you’ve returned home, make sure to have the gas valve returned to receive normal flow.

REMEMBER! If it’s a gas problem or issue, only have a plumber or gas company technician turn the gas back on.

If you still have questions regarding shutting off your gas, don’t hesitate to contact us for further instruction, or any other plumbing need you might have!

When a hot water heater is gaining in years, it can become difficult to gauge exactly when it is time for a replacement. In certain cases, there are no signs that a water heater is running out until the very last moment of its life. So how do you know when it’s time to change your hot water heater? Some easy signs to look for are:

Age – Most hot water heaters last around 8-12 years. How old is yours?

Water – If your hot water is starting to have a rust color or appears to be dirty.

Temperature – Have you noticed a significant decrease in the amount of hot water you’re getting?

Cold Water – If you’re taking a shower/bath and the water is ice cold without ever getting warm.

Moisture – Is there moisture gathering around the base of your hot water heater? If there is flooding, or more than simple moisture, it’s gone bad.

Corrosion – Look for signs of deterioration or rust around the metal cylindrical tank, pipes or hoses.

What should I do if I noticed these signs?

This is how we repair your sewer the non-invasive way:

Cut the sod and pull it back.

Dig down to the sewer line where your sewer line connects to your home. Once we reach the sewer line, you’ll be able to clearly see the reason for your sewer problems.

Dig a second hole at the city sewer lateral, where your sewer line connects to the municipal line.

Cut a length of polyethylene pipe to match exactly the length of your residential sewer line.

Attach the cutting head – the blade that will break up the existing pipe – to the front of the polyethylene pipe.

Insert the polyethylene pipe into the first hole to begin the process of breaking up the existing pipe. A piston-like device is used at the sewer lateral to pull the new pipe through the old one.

Once the pipe has made it all the way through the old pipe, attach it to the lateral and attach the pipe to your home line with a clean-out for future ease of access.

Refill the holes and replace the sod so your yard looks as good as new!

If you’re in need of sewer replacement or to get in touch with a California plumber, get in touch with Dutton Plumbing today!
