Heat Pump Hot Water Heater - How It Works

faucetA heat pump is one of those newer, modern age pieces of technology that we all wonder why they haven’t been around since the dawn of man-made power. Much more cost efficient to run; big savings can be made over the more traditional type of heating source.
If you’re anything like us, you’ll want to know what makes them so good and so efficient; here are some of the basics involved with them:

Different types

A heat pump can extract heat from three different sources; air, water or ground. The most common type being an air sourced pump.
The heat pump removes heat from the air and transfers it (in this case) to your hot water system. They do use electricity to do this, but they are roughly THREE times more efficient than the more conventional types of heater.

Imagine a refrigerator in reverse – instead of removing the heat from inside and dispersing it in to the atmosphere, it takes the heat from the atmosphere and transfers it into the system, in this case, your hot water system.

Installation

There are very specific conditions to gaining the maximum benefit from using a heat pump, aside from knowing the size, type and particular method of heat extraction; they do need to be installed by a professional who really knows what they are doing.
You could have the best system in the world, but if it has been installed badly or without thought as to what it needs to do, you may as well not bother, it won’t work to its full efficiency.
