If you are replacing an old one, or you are putting one in for the first time, you are probably wondering how to install a garbage disposal. This is something that can be fairly simple, especially if you are someone who has some plumbing and wiring experience. If you need help with installation, or need any repairs done, we at Dutton Plumbing are happy to help.
Step 1
Before installing the disposal, make sure that the power is turned off at the breaker box. Next, roll out a rope of plumber’s putty, about 1/2-inch thick, and apply it to the sink opening.
Step 2
Press the flange of the disposal down onto the hole of the drain in order for the putty to form a seal. Attach the fiber gasket and backup ring to the flange, and place the mounting ring around the flange from under the sink.
Step 3
With a screwdriver, secure the mounting ring to the flange by tightening the screws. Make sure that the screws are tightened evenly. Clean any excess putty with a damp sponge.
Step 4
Next, you will learn how to install a garbage disposal to the mounting ring. Align the disposal so that the drain outlet is facing the actual drain pipe. Turn the mounting ring so that all mounting ears are locked into place.
Step 5
Connect the drain lines and make sure that the connections are tight. Next, lock the disposal into place. Finally, plug the electrical cord from the disposal into the power outlet. In order to restore power, flip on the breaker switch. You are now ready to enjoy your new garbage disposal.
Even if you know how to install a garbage disposal, you may need extra assistance or want help with future disposal issues.
