A minor leak can usually be sorted at your convenience, especially if you’re able to catch the water easily. Every leak can be different, though. Leaking because of a loose fitting is one thing, but leaking because a pipe has been damaged usually results in something more serious. You must also remember that if you have water coming through a ceiling, for instance, there is a good chance that the water has already reached a good many places and is now just finding the path of least resistance, meaning that a full-on disaster could be close.

Get you and your family to safety as a priority. If you can shut the gas off easily as you leave, then do so, but don’t put yourself in further danger.
