No one likes those pesky fruit flies, especially not near your kitchen drain. Although they are small, they are a big frustration for many homeowners. Luckily, there are some very simple steps you can take to get rid of them for good. Dutton Plumbing has seen it all! We are happy to share our secrets on getting rid of these tiny nuisances.
Keep It Clean
When you are trying to get rid of fruit flies, the key is to get rid of potential food sources and breeding grounds. Fruit flies love leftover food, especially fruit, so make sure to keep your kitchen free of food debris. Put lids on all trashcans or disposal bins in your home. Try to keep your counters and sink area as dry as possible. Fruit flies love to breed in moist areas, so check around your sink for cracks or crevasses that could be holding water.
Fruit Fly Traps
There are several professional fruit fly traps on the market that lure the flies to sticky sweet paper. These are incredibly effective and very inexpensive. Many people also have discovered that a small jar with jam at the bottom and a small hole in top can effectively trap large numbers of fruit flies.
Drain Treatment
Many times, fruit flies breed in the moist drain where food is decomposing near the garbage disposal. To see if this is the source of your infestation, place a piece of clear tape over the sink and wait a few hours. If flies are stuck to the tape, you know this is the source of your issue. A ½ cup of bleach poured into the sink will often do the trick. There are also specific fruit fly drain treatments available.
